Cocaine Addiction Treatment

What is Cocaine?

Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that physically alters the chemistry of your brain and your central nervous system. When snorted or injected, it increases the levels of dopamine and releases it, which gives the users feelings of happiness and excitement. As such, cocaine can quickly alter the brain’s dopamine production, leading to addicting habits in order to get those same “high” feelings and effects again. In the powder form, cocaine is called simply cocaine or coke.

What is Crack?

Crack cocaine is cocaine in the rock form instead of the powder form. When the hydrochloride salt in its powdered form (cocaine) is combined with water and another substance (usually sodium bicarbonate), it forms a solid that can be broken into smaller pieces. This rock form is called crack cocaine or more commonly crack. Crack is more commonly smoked, whereas cocaine is snorted or injected. Crack is highly potent because of its intense concentration, and crack addiction can occur after only a few uses.

Cocaine Treatment

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), in 2014 there were an estimated 1.5 million current cocaine users aged 12 or older. Adults aged 18 to 25 years have a higher rate of current cocaine use than any other age group. Furthermore, in the same year, 913,000 Americans met the criteria for dependence or abuse of cocaine.

However, a major challenge for those struggling with substance abuse is a lack of meaning in life, which ultimately leads to a variety of health issues and recovery concerns.

At the Phoenix Recovery Center we offer individualized treatment programs for cocaine and crack addiction recovery. In addition, we know and understand the science of chemical dependency with its associated neurological changes and its impact upon the pleasure system, emotions, learning, memory, motivation, and most importantly, the ability to exercise choice. We know and understand the biological and psychological science that support treatments in trauma, emotional disorders, and other mental health concerns.

In short, we work towards a greater sense of meaning that has been positively associated with the capacity to overcome difficulties in life and an ability to increase mental and physical welfare.

Below is information relating to cocaine addiction and our treatment programs.

What is Cocaine and Crack Addiction?

Cocaine and crack addiction occurs when the brain’s natural reward system (dopamine) can no longer function effectively. Because the drug allows for continually dopamin releases, it creates an intense feeling of euphoria that users will want to repeat. Therefore, a person develops dependence on cocaine and experiences major withdrawal when they stop taking cocaine.

Once addiction begins, it can be very hard to break, as people experience withdrawal symptoms and a greater motivation to get their next “fix.” It can disrupt daily life as well as ruin family and friend relationships and lead to serious money issues, health issues, and illegal activity when not treated.
