Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program

Intensive Outpatient Program

What Is IOP Treatment?

IOP treatment, also known as Intensive Outpatient Program treatment, is a structured mental health program that provides therapy and support to individuals who require more than regular outpatient care but do not require 24-hour supervision in a hospital setting. It typically involves group therapy, individual counseling, and psychoeducation sessions to address various mental health conditions and promote recovery.

IOP stands for Intensive Outpatient Program and is designed to be both a support group and treatment service for qualified candidates. Programs treat many mental health illnesses including: depression, anxiety, trauma, mood disorder, personality disorder, and other mental health disorders. Unlike inpatient program attendees who live in the therapy facility, intensive outpatient program members attend individual counseling, support groups, medication management, psychiatric screenings, and many other impactful services offered every week.

These programs truly allow the patient to remain comfortable at home while receiving the clinically proven help they need several hours a day. The flexibility and freedom to continue on with life’s responsibilities during therapy is what sets intensive outpatient programs apart from any other program. In addition, the reintegration stage from treatment to everyday life is far more successful due to the already integrated lifestyle the patient has with the recovery process.

Intensive Outpatient Program Details and Benefits

The Intensive Outpatient Program at The Phoenix Recovery Center meets Monday through Thursday, with group hours provided both during the day and evening to support all schedules. IOP program participants attend 8 hours of group and 1 hour of individual therapy a week. Mental wellness skills and therapeutic experiences allow patients to gain insight into their mental health management efforts. This also allows self-awareness of life pursuits and the corresponding stresses and coping skills required to be successful.

Here at The Phoenix Recovery Center, we believe in providing every resource possible to our patients so that they can take those personalized tools with them to aid in their day-to-day recovery maintenance. As the person in treatment continues to build upon their mental health recovery capital, a form of education and skill development to aid in sustained recovery, their former mental health management practices diminish. This displays progress, as well as greater recovery and life skills development. The developmental process of wellness is reflected in the recovery person building upon their behavioral and social affiliations and community-based recovery support. Additionally, the patient demonstrates that they have identified and are actively pursuing life meanings in career, education, familial relationships, and personal interests that they find meaningful.

Research indicates that when a patient has achieved a degree of psychiatric stability and wellness in an institutional setting and immediately re-enters life without adequate psychiatric and recovery support, the person often digresses. As a result, decreasing treatment exposure commensurate with increasing life becomes an essential part of treatment across the continuum of care. This is why it is strongly recommended that from a residential treatment experience individuals step down to a day treatment program & then to an intensive outpatient program. This level of care provides the necessary psychiatric support while the recovering person acclimates back into life with its associated challenges.

Recovery Capital In the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

During each level of care, the Phoenix Recovery & Counseling Centers provide recovery capital. This recovery capital is accomplished through three types of therapy:

  • Medical Intervention & Pharmacological Treatment: Our medical team evaluates medication & care throughout services.
  • Individual Therapy: Patients are treated in a one-on-one environment by a licensed therapist.
  • Group Therapy: Clients are treated in support groups led by a legal therapist.
  • Recreational Therapy: Clients are treated with activity-based intervention based on their individual needs.

The customized intensive outpatient program created for each patient is based on their varying needs and social behaviors. Furthermore, the three specific areas of recovery capital that we have found to be the best tools for lasting success include:

  • Personal Capital
  • Family and Social Capital
  • Community Recovery Capital

Initially, personal recovery capital focuses on basic wellness such as financial resources, housing situation, access to transportation, etc. Another large part of personal capital are the psychological aspects of developing your dreams, hopes and beliefs for a meaningful life.

Additionally, relationship recovery capital focuses on family and social relationships. This, in part, has to do with the level of support the patient has outside of The Phoenix Recovery Center.

Finally, community recovery capital focuses on local resources such as vocational rehabilitation, schools, employment, access to groups, etc. This form of recovery capital is key in seeing lasting success in behavior by significantly helping patients during their after-treatment recovery.
